Convert M4A to MP3
Transcode M4A and AAC audio into the universally compatible MP3 format. Everything runs locally in your browser — no uploads, no waiting in a queue, no privacy trade-offs.
Drag & Drop M4A file
or click to browse from device
M4A is the container Apple uses for AAC audio — it's what the Voice Memos app saves, what iTunes and Apple Music downloads use, and what a lot of audiobooks and voice recordings ship in. AAC inside M4A is technically excellent and usually sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. The problem is compatibility: plenty of car stereos, older MP3 players, fitness watches, DJ software, and budget Android phones simply refuse to play .m4a files. When something won't open your audio, MP3 is the safe answer. This converter re-wraps and re-encodes your M4A audio into MP3 without sending anything to a server. It loads FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly into your browser, reads your file into memory, decodes the AAC stream, and encodes a fresh MP3 at your chosen bitrate. Because the work happens on your own machine, private recordings — voice memos, interviews, personal notes — never leave your device. Most files convert in just a few seconds, and you can batch through several one after another without any account or upload limits.
Ready in 3 simple steps
Add your M4A
Drag in or select the .m4a file — a voice memo, audiobook chapter, or any AAC audio clip.
Choose Bitrate
Pick 96kbps for spoken word, or up to 320kbps when you want maximum fidelity for music.
Get your MP3
The encoder runs locally and the finished MP3 downloads to your device automatically.
M4A already sounds great — why switch?
If your devices and apps all play M4A, there's no quality reason to convert; AAC is excellent. The single reason to go to MP3 is compatibility. Choose 256kbps or 320kbps if you want to keep the conversion as transparent as possible.
Why convert M4A to MP3
Universal Playback
MP3 plays on virtually every device ever made — car head units, old iPods, smart speakers, and basic phones that choke on M4A.
Apple Voice Memos
Voice Memos exports as .m4a. Convert to MP3 to share recordings with people on any platform or import into other apps.
Editing & Software
Some DJ tools, ringtone makers, and legacy editors only accept MP3. Convert first and they'll load without complaints.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
+
No. M4A files are decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your audio stays on your device, which makes this safe for private voice memos and recordings.
Won't converting lose quality?
+
Both M4A (AAC) and MP3 are lossy, so a re-encode introduces a tiny generational loss. At 256kbps or 320kbps it's effectively inaudible. For voice recordings, even 128kbps is more than enough.
Can it convert Apple Music or iTunes purchases?
+
Only if the file is not DRM-protected. Most modern downloads and all your own Voice Memos are unprotected and convert fine. Protected purchases cannot and should not be circumvented.
Does it handle large audiobook files?
+
Yes, though long files use more memory since processing is local. A desktop browser handles multi-hour audiobooks more reliably than a phone.
What about AAC files with a .aac or .mp4 extension?
+
This tool targets the .m4a container specifically. For raw .aac or audio inside .mp4/.mov, try our MOV to MP3 converter or another matching tool.
